2020 Summer Seminar Schedule
Applying to Summer Internship Programs
Students in high school, college, graduate, or professional school are eligible for one of three summer programs at NIDA IRP:
- Summer Internship Program (HSH-SIP) in Biomedical Research for High School Students
- Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Biomedical Research
- Recruitment and Training Program for Under-represented Populations (RTURP)
For the HS-SIP (high school students), you must be:
- at least 17 years old by June 15 (if you are 17, you must live within 40 miles of the NIH campus where you will intern; this requirement does not apply to applicants who are 18)
- a high school junior or senior at time of application
- a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- enrolled at least half-time in high school
For the SIP, you must be
- at least 17 years old by June 15
- a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- enrolled in college, graduate, medical, or dental school or accepted into college or graduate school
For the RTURP Program, you must be:
- from an under-represented group in science
- a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- enrolled in high school, college, graduate, medical, or dental school or accepted into college or graduate school
- at least 17 years old by June 15 (if you are 17, you must live within 40 miles of the NIH campus where you will intern; this requirement does not apply to applicants who are 18)
- a junior or senior if in high school

Please read carefully the information about each program found at the websites above.
Applications must be submitted online. Your application is entered into a database and is available to all NIH investigators. Early applications are encouraged because most investigators begin searching for students in January. Contacting individual investgators is strongly encouraged.
Application deadline for the HS-SIP is February 1.
Application deadline for the SIP and RTURP is March 1.

Summer Internship at NIDA IRP
Your summer experience begins with several days of orientation, during which you get your NIH badge and hear about the educational opportunities available over the summer (see below). Most of your time will be spent working with a scientist on a research project. In early August, you will have the opportunity to present your research findings in the form of a poster.
