Welcome to NIDA!

The Office of Education and Career Development (OECD) offers several ways to help you get oriented to NIDA and Baltimore:

  • Peer Mentors 2016-17 [PDF] is a group of postbacs, grad students, and postdocs who meet each month with new trainees to welcome them to NIDA and answer their questions.
  • The Guide to Baltimore [PDF] and Things to Do [PDF] can help you get settled in Baltimore and find fun things to do.

As a postbac student, you are expected to work full-time on a research project under the supervision of a NIDA scientist and to apply to graduate or medical school.

See recent presentations sponsored by OECD on the following:

  • choosing a graduate program or medical school
  • preparing for the GRE or MCAT
  • writing personal statements
  • mock interviews
  • preparing and presenting a poster
  • giving an oral presentation
  • time management

Postbac Research Lunch [PDF]
Each month, two postbacs present data they have collected. This allows you to practice speaking skills and allows everyone to find out about your research.

OECD Library List [PDF]
The OECD has a lending library of GRE and MCAT study materials and books on scientific writing, mentoring, career development, teaching, time management, networking, and careers in science.  If you’d like to borrow any of these books, stop by the office or contact us.
