Summer Research Training Programs
2011 Summer Students
The goal of the Summer Research Training Program is to give students the opportunity to work directly with a NIDA scientist on a biomedical research project, thereby gaining invaluable hands-on research experience and training. Students in high school, college, and graduate or medical school are eligible for the program. Students begin their internship on one of two dates in June. Internships last a minimum of 8 weeks and culminate in the first week of August with two Poster Days, one at NIDA in Baltimore and one at NIH in Bethesda. At the poster sessions, students present their data in poster format, identical to that of a professional scientific meeting. In addition to their research project, students attend weekly Student Seminars presented by NIDA scientists. The seminars are designed to highlight the breadth of drug abuse research being conducted at NIDA.
Students can apply to either of two summer programs:
For both programs, students must be at least 16 years old before the internship begins, be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and be enrolled at least half-time in high school, college, graduate, medical, or dental school. Students who have been accepted into college or graduate school are also eligible. Applications for the
NIH Summer Internship Program must be submitted online between November 15 and March 1. When the application is completed, it enters a searchable database and becomes available to all NIH investigators. Early applications are encouraged because most investigators begin searching for students in January. Contacting individual investgators is also encouraged. We have prepared some
